At St. John’s our pastors often preach in series, connecting our worship experiences across a number of Sundays.

  • Again & Again

    Again & Again

Again & Again: A Lenten Refrain

In Lent, we’re reminded that, again and again, suffering and brokenness find us. We doubt again, we lament again, we mess up again. Again and again, the story of Jesus on the cross repeats—every time lives are taken unjustly, every time the powerful choose corruption and violence,
every time individuals forget how to love. With exacerbation we exclaim, “Again?! How long, O God?”

And yet, in the midst of the motion blur chaos of our lives, God offers a sacred refrain: “I choose you, I love you, I will lead you to repair.” Again and again, God breaks the cycle and offers us a new way forward.

This Lent, we have a clear invitation from God in a time when much is unclear. Even if worshiping apart, we come to God again and again with our prayers, our dreams, our hopes, and our doubts. Even if from a distance, we will continue to be community to one another—especially when it’s hard—by choosing each other over and over again. We will continue to love God with the same persistence God chooses and claims us. Again & Again, A Lenten Refrain, speaks to the ways God can make music of our lives. “Refrain” also reminds us that Lent is a season of abstaining from certain practices in order to take on new rhythms and habits.

In this season, we need rituals—both old and new—to remember and be
transformed. Embodied practice builds muscle memory. Repetition helps retrain our neural pathways. We need the 40 days of Lent because this season shapes us into more faithful disciples.

Join us this Lent, as again and again, we bring all of who we are to God and trust that God will meet us, time and again, along the way.

    Easter Sunday April 4

“Again & Again, The Sun Rises”
    Mark 16:1-8
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

In the Easter story according to Mark, on the first day of the week, the women rise with the sun and buy spices to anoint Jesus’ body. They are shocked to find the tomb empty, and leave in fear and terror. Mark’s resurrection story is less triumphant than the other Gospel testimonies (as scholars believe the remainder of Mark’s gospel was a later addition). In Mark’s version, we are reminded that Easter comes to us, again and again, even if we don’t know what to make of God’s resurrection ways. Again and again, the sun rises. And some days, that is enough.

    Friday April 2

Our Good Friday worship service is a Service of Tenebrae. “Tenebrae” is the Latin word meaning “darkness.” This service, based on a 12th century tradition, is an extended meditation on the passion of Christ which includes readings, prayers, music, and times of silence. During the service, we will hear the story of the trial, sentencing, execution, death, and burial of Jesus. After each segment of the story is read, a candle will be extinguished. We invite you to light a candle at the beginning of the service, which we will ceremonially extinguish near the end of worship. Download the worship guide here.

    Thursday April 1

During our Maundy Thursday service, we will premiere “Man of Sorrows: A Canticle for Holy Thursday” by Dr. Terry Byars.

Framed by the events of the Last Supper, the narrative told in song is through the eyes of Jesus and his disciple, Peter. Servanthood is at the heart of the message for this special service. Download the worship guide here.

    Sunday March 28

“Again & Again: We Draw on Courage”
    Mark 11:1-11
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

On Palm Sunday, we remember that Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem was not a risk- free, palm party. It was a protest parade—a protest against those in power, a parade to prepare the way for a different kind of king. And this was all happening with plots to kill Lazarus (and Jesus) building in the background. Today we’re reminded that the crowds were brave to show up that day, and that Jesus drew on courage to face his journey to the cross. The root of courage is cour, meaning “heart.” Courage is deep within us; we often find it when we most need it, when everything else has been stripped away.

    Sunday March 21

“Again & Again: We Are Reformed”
    John 12:20-33
    Rev. Deirdré Halliburton

We desire for God to write on our hearts so that God’s law can re-shape and re-form us from the inside out. Reformation is a journey of letting the old fall away for something new to emerge, of returning to God’s words over and over, of being drawn into the heart of God.

    Sunday March 14

“Again & Again: God Loves First”
    John 3:14-21
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

We read one of the most well known passages of scripture. After inviting Nicodemus to be born anew, Jesus tells him in John 3 that God so loved the world that God sent his son to restore it. Therefore, when we read John 3:16, we remember that Jesus is speaking in metaphor and poetry. Ultimately, love is where God begins and ends. This love, like grace, is a gift we do nothing to deserve. Again and again, love is our refrain. Together, we will ponder if before we act, think, or believe, can love be first for us too?

    Sunday March 7

“Again & Again, We Are Shown the Way”
    John 2:13-22
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

According to John’s gospel, Jesus begins his ministry by showing more than telling. This week we read how in the temple, Jesus disrupts and overturns the systems of corruption and profiteering taking place, but ultimately points us to the promise of restoration.

    Sunday February 28

“Again & Again, We Are Called to Listen”
    Mark 8:31-9:8
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

Like the disciples, we are often stuck in the pattern of messing up over and over again. We cling to power, we climb the ladder, we memorialize Christ’s teachings rather than embodying them. However, we can’t be trapped by shame, guilt, ignorance, or inaction. Humility is required for transformation. In this week’s worship, we hear how again and again, we are called to listen—to God and to others.

    Sunday February 21

“Again & Again, God Meets Us”
    Mark 1:9-15
    Rev. Lane Cotton Winn

This week in worship, we read about how God meets Jesus at the water before he is tempted in the wilderness— this is important. First and foremost, God claims us. God meets us in the liminal space, at the water’s edge, at the threshold of something new, and names us Beloved. God’s covenant with all of creation reminds us that God meets us where we are—in the midst of our reluctance, doubt, eagerness, or weariness—and proclaims we are good.

    Ash Wednesday

We offered a unique Ash Wednesday Worship February 17 at 6 p.m. on Zoom. You will want to have your doodle page from the Lent to Geaux bag and a candle. The Sanctuary was open from 12 – 2 pm, although our drive-thru ashes in the morning had to be canceled due to the winter weather.

Pick up Lent to Geaux bags from the church office during our abbreviated hours (Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.) or before or after in-person worship on Sundays at 8:30 or 11 a.m.

  • I Believe Even When…

    I Believe Even When…

Our Advent theme this year is “I Believe Even When…” and comes from a quote found scrawled on a wall during the Holocaust which read: “I believe in the sun, even when the sun is not shining.”

We are called to have faith and believe in God even when things feel insurmountable. This has certainly been a year with situations and circumstances that feel insurmountable and beyond our control….and yet

God continues to move and speak to us. God’s presence is with us, like a Good Shepherd, who does not leave us in dark places but walks with us always.

    Advent Worship Series

This Advent, we are looking to hear some words of comfort, of challenge and of good news, which will come to us from the prophet Isaiah and the four Gospel authors. The power of narrative and music will call us to transformation and reconciliation through hope, love, joy, and peace. This Advent and Christmas, let us fill the night with music and light and affirm and act on the reasons why we can still “believe, even when” we are discouraged. Find the livestream videos on our Vimeo page.

    Advent Devotional 2020

Members and friends of St. John’s have written daily reflections that will guide us throughout the Advent season. Our devotional is available as a PDF download (for printing as a booklet or for viewing as pages on screen), as printed copies (a limited number available from the church office), and was sent as a daily email and shared on our social media channels. The devotionals are also posts on our website. Use whichever medium suits you best, or use them all.

    Advent Devotional Study

We will be offering two options for Advent studies on Tuesdays (December 1, 8, 15, and possibly December 22) using our Advent devotional, “I Believe Even When …”. The morning session will be at 10 a.m. (in person, social distanced, with masks), the evening session will be at 6 p.m. on Zoom. If you would like to participate in this study, please email Pastor Deirdre or call the church office.

  • Entrusted

    Entrusted

First four Sundays of November 2020

Our calling to faithful service is not always easy to respond to, but all things are possible when we realize how much God loves us and entrusts us to care for others. This lectionary-based series will follow readings from the Gospel of Matthew, which encourages us to accept the mantle of responsibility for the work to which God calls us. Through this four week series, we will see how important our individual contributions are to the Church and to the building up of God’s kingdom. Entrusted by God, we’re all in this together!

  • Together for Joy

    Together for Joy

Despite all the challenges of 2020, St. John’s has remained together in spirit.  Even during this less than marvelous year, God has been faithful and active. This October we will join creation in rejoicing — together for joy — for all God has done.

From Psalm 98, we read, “Sing to God a new song, for God has done marvelous things. Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy.” As we’ve all learned over these difficult months of physical distancing, staying connected – being “together for joy” – has only become more important. And though the challenges we face are real, so are the opportunities to sing to God a new song, for God has done – and will do – marvelous things!

It seems fitting that we will resume in-person worship and welcome small groups to gather on the same day that we kickoff “Together for Joy,” for it will truly be a joyful time of praise and fellowship together! Whether it is in-person or online, we invite you to worship with us on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at 10 a.m. and throughout October as we celebrate with joy our togetherness in the body of Christ!

  • All The Feels

    All The Feels

    All the Feels:
Seeking God When Our Emotions Are All Over the Place

This year has brought us crisis and uncertainty like never before. Our hearts and minds are responding with emotions like anxiety, fear, sadness, and anger, as we collectively grieve our losses. What do we do with all these God-given emotions we feel? How can we manage them in a healthy way? Where can we find hope amid this grief and loss? What does scripture teach us about processing “all the feels” we have?

During this worship series, we will explore the landscape of these questions and the intersection of our feelings and faith. Each week, we will hear from a different preacher, who will offer us a pastoral word, as together we hold one another in this grief.

  • Unraveled

    Unraveled

    Unraveled
Seeking God When Our Plans Fall Apart

What happens when our world falls apart? How do we press onward when our tightly-knit plans unravel into loose threads? What do we become when our identity-or the path we’re on-comes undone? What if all of this is not the end we fear it will be?

In our unraveling, sometimes life surprises us with unexpected joy, love, and hope–with a new beginning we couldn’t have imagined. Sometimes we need God to unravel us, for we long to be changed.

Our summer worship series beginning Sunday, June 21, explores biblical stories of unraveled shame, identity, fear, grief, dreams, and expectations. These are stories where God meets us in the spiraling, unraveling our plans–and us–into something new.

  • The Heart of the Matter

    The Heart of the Matter

Easter is not just a day. It is a whole season of time when we remember that Jesus’ Spirit lives on in each one of us. The life and death of Jesus had one strong message that was both overt and inherent: love one another. The heart of the matter was love.

In the Bible, the early church was described in this way:
“Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.” (Acts 2: 46-47a)

So over the next few weeks, we are following our ancestor’s traditions. We are creating a “temple” of worship in our hearts. Whether we can be physically together or not, we are together in spirit. The earliest Christians worshiped in their homes before they had churches, and so will we, until we can meet again in our sanctuary. Because at the “heart of the matter,” we are connected through the Spirit that makes us one in love.

As we gather each Sunday, we invite you to have your “worry stone” (or “heart stone”) with you and light a candle to set your space and heart for worship.

  • The God We Can Know

    The God We Can Know

    Lent Worship and Study Series

In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the “I Am” sayings, meaningful metaphors such as “I am the bread of life” and “I am the light of the world,” to reveal his mission and purpose. One by one, the “I Am” sayings of Jesus not only grab our imagination about Jesus’ identity, they also help us to experience God, who spoke the first “I AM” to Moses.

This Lent our sermon series will be inspired by the “I Am” statements in scripture and a book called The God We Can Know, by Rev. Rob Fuquay. Join us for this insightful worship and study series as we learn more about the God we can know and as we seek to answer Jesus’ question to us, “Who do you say I am?”

  • Almost Christmas

    Almost Christmas

In 1741, John Wesley preached his famous sermon “The Almost Christian,” in which he encouraged people to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, striving to be altogether Christians. This Advent, we will consider how God is inviting us to move from an almost faith to an altogether one, as we prepare to welcome the Christ child in a fresh way this Christmas. Our series will bring together the traditional Advent themes of Peace, Hope, Joy, and Love and the best of our Wesleyan heritage.

Every household is invited to take home the daily devotional, Almost Christmas: Devotions for the Season. The book contains 31 daily readings for December, based on reflections from John Wesley’s sermon, “The Almost Christian,” and hymns by Charles Wesley. A love offering will help us offset the cost of the books. Suggested donation: $5

    Care-Full Encounters

    A three-week worship series: November 10, 17 and 24

It is often difficult to have rational conversations with those with whom we disagree or those who chafe at our religious beliefs or political views. In this series, we will look at how we are called to be in care-full conversation and actions with our families, church and community. Join us each week as we consider how scripture and Jesus speak to how we are to care and love one another.
